Karyotype Instructions Karyotype - Packet with all 5 smears Wednesday January 24th Daily Starter 1/24/18 Today's activity combines sex determination with the X and Y chromosome along with Dominant and Recessive Genes. You will simulate how genes carried on the X Chromosome can have a very different outcome in males and females. Be sure to open the Sex Linked Traits Instructions as you read and work through your assignment. Sex Linked Traits Instructions Sex Linked Traits Packet Tuesday January 23rd Daily Starter 1/23/18 Today's activity looks at human genotypes and the phenotypes that result. For each characteristic on the list, flip two coins. If you get two heads your person will have the homozygous dominant trait, if you get one head and one tail, your person will be heterozygous and show the dominant trait and if you get two tails, your person will have the recessive trait. Flip coins for each characteristic and then draw what you think the person looks like. Human Genetic Characteristic List Procedures for the Activity PPT Look at this for examples of how to complete the assignment. Monday January 22nd Daily Starter 1/22/18 In today's assignment, we will apply what we noted on Friday. You will be identifying genotypes and phenotypes along with making punnett squares. Be sure to pay attention to the patterns and come to Mr. Haug for help if you are not sure. SpongeBob Genetics Friday January 19th
Daily Starter 1/19/18 We will be applying the discoveries of Gregor Mendel and making probability charts called Punnet Squares. You will see how Dominant genes and recessive genes work along with examples of co-dominance and incomplete dominance. Open the document (Punnet Square PowerPoint) and use it to complete the Genetic Cross Notes. Color the Punnet square color plate and turn in your assignment. You will be making one coin represent an egg cell and one coin will represent a sperm the cell. By flipping the coin you will simulate fertilization and the combination of the sex chromosomes. If you get XX you will have a girl and XY it will be a boy. Fertilization Simulation Tuesday January 16th Daily Starter 1/16/18 Today you will be learning about Meiosis. Daily Starter 1/12/18 ATLAS Portal Today is a make-up day. All missing assignments are due today. When finished he'd you can work on the probability word search for extra credit. Thursday January 11th Daily Starter 1/11/2018 Today's assignment: 50:50 Chances 50:50 Chances Sample Data In this activity we look at the variety of children that can be in one family. You will be creating 15 families, each with 6 children. Flip a coin 6 times for each family. For every Heads you will get a Girl and for every Tails you will get a Boy. Probability would predict that every family will have 3 girls and 3 boys. The reality of course is very different. Look at the Sample Data for help. The goal of the activity is to be able to explain how some families can have all boys, some can have all girls and some will be a mixture. In addition, be able to explain why the probability is still 50:50 for boys and girls. Pay attention to the size of the family compared to the size of all 15 families together. Wednesday January 10th Daily Starter 1/10/2018 Today we will continue to collect data for the probability lab. It is important to note that the reason we use 100 trials is get our results closer to the expected probabilities that you are looking up online. If you only did 4 trials, it is very possible to get the same result 4 times in a row. Remember on your assignment to collect data for all 4 experiments: 1 coin, 2 coins, 1 die, 2 dice Record your results on both your paper and in the Excel document: Excel - Probability File Record the results calculated by the Excel document onto your paper. Next, look up online the actual expected probabilities for each of the four experiments. Finally, Answer the two questions on the document and turn in your paper to Mr. Haug today. Tuesday January 9th Daily Starter 1/9/2018 We are starting our unit on Genetics Much of what we learn about in genetics is based on the probability of something happening. Today we will be calculating some probabilities of coin flips and dice throws. This will relate to how genes combine. Complete the attached Excel Probability File and Fill in the calculations it produces on your Probability File - Written Document. Be sure to answer the two questions. You will have today and tomorrow to complete and turn in your data tables.
